Design Winter Collection: Luxury Hotel Picks in Helsinki, Prague & Innsbruck
This winter, Europe is at its most theatrical: snow-dusted capitals, glowing Christmas markets, and hotel lobbies that feel more like galleries than reception areas. For our Design Winter Collection, we’re spotlighting three cities — Helsinki, Prague, and Innsbruck — and the stays that pair strong aesthetics with quietly confident luxury.
Helsinki – Nordic Light & Quiet Glamour
Finland’s capital is one of Europe’s great design cities, and its best hotels lean into that identity with art, architecture, and wellness at the core.
Hotel St. George
For: Art collectors at heart & spa lovers
Facing the leafy Old Church Park in the city center, Hotel St. George is a modern luxury hotel built inside historic 19th-century buildings, with 148 individually designed rooms and suites. Expect calm, muted interiors, contemporary Finnish and international artworks throughout, and a layout that feels more private residence than traditional grand hotel.
In winter, the glass-covered Wintergarden Bar becomes the hotel’s glowing heart — a high-ceilinged indoor courtyard where guests gather for inventive cocktails (including the signature “Learning to fly” served in a bird-shaped glass) and Finnish-style tapas.
Below, St. George Care offers a spa with indoor pool, sauna, and treatments, with complimentary spa access (age and room-category dependent), making it a particularly appealing base when the temperature outside dips well below zero.
Concierge note: Pair a late-morning swim and sauna with an unhurried breakfast from the in-house St. George Bakery — think excellent bread, pastries, and Nordic simplicity on the plate.
Klaus K Hotel
For: Urban design fans & rooftop bar devotees
A fixture on Bulevardi in central Helsinki, Klaus K Hotel is a 4-star design hotel inspired by Finnish mythology and stories, with 171 rooms (including artist-designed suites) and a strong contemporary aesthetic.
The hotel’s style is clean and modern, but not cold; public spaces mix bold furnishings with warm light, and dining leans Italian at its Toscanini restaurant.
In the colder months, the highlight is the Sky Terrace Rooftop Bar on the 7th floor — a glassed-in, semi-heated terrace that opens seasonally and, when operating, looks out over Esplanade Park and the city’s historic rooftops. It’s more “design-forward aerie” than typical hotel bar, and on selected evenings, DJs give it a low-key club energy.
Concierge note: In deep winter, the terrace opening hours are weather-dependent. We check dates and conditions before promising sunset cocktails with a skyline view.
Prague – Baroque Romance, Modern Lines
Prague in winter is all spires and steam—from mulled wine at Old Town Square’s Christmas market to mist rising off the Vltava. Our favorite design hotels here layer contemporary interiors over Gothic and Baroque streetscapes.
BoHo Hotel Prague
For: Minimalists who still want indulgence
Just a short walk from Old Town Square, BoHo Hotel Prague occupies a former newspaper office and turns it into a sleek, modern retreat. High ceilings, full-height windows, and a neutral palette create a gallery-like calm, punctuated by sculptural furniture and contemporary art.
The hotel features a luxury spa and wellness area, with treatments designed for post-sightseeing recovery, alongside a library lounge and a restaurant-bar serving international cuisine and signature cocktails.
The location means you’re close enough to wander to the Astronomical Clock, Charles Bridge, and the city’s main Christmas market — then retreat within minutes to BoHo’s quieter side street.
The Emblem Prague Hotel & M Spa
For: Rooftop soaking with a cityscape backdrop
A few blocks from Old Town Square, The Emblem Prague Hotel combines Art Deco references and contemporary design in a boutique-sized property that feels very much like a luxe private club.
Upstairs, The M Spa is the showstopper: a rooftop wellness space with a private outdoor jacuzzi, terrace, and city views, paired with treatments featuring French skincare brands like Pure Altitude and Codage Paris. After dark, soaking in warm water while Prague’s towers glow in the cold air is one of the city’s more cinematic winter experiences.
Concierge note: We often reserve the private rooftop jacuzzi session just before dinner — one hour of views, bubbles, and a glass of Prosecco sets exactly the right tone for a night in the Old Town.
Mosaic House Design Hotel
For: Eco-conscious design & spa-in-the-city vibes
Mosaic House Design Hotel re-opened in 2020 after a full refurbishment and positions itself as an eco-friendly design hotel with a playful, contemporary aesthetic.
Its Wellness Oasis is a genuine urban sanctuary: a private spa with Finnish sauna, whirlpool, and massage options, open daily and available by reservation even to non-residents. Rooms and common areas continue the theme with clean lines, warm woods, and subtle references to Czech design heritage.
Concierge note: This is our go-to recommendation for design-forward guests who care about sustainability but still want a polished, “small luxury hotel” feel.
Innsbruck – Alpine Architecture & Winter Wellness
Ringed by the Nordkette mountains, Innsbruck is where city break and ski escape blur. Our picks here skew towards design-focused properties that either place you in the heart of town or just outside it in full-on wellness retreat mode.
The Penz Hotel
For: City-meets-mountain views & sleek architecture
Set within the modern Rathaus-Galerie complex, The Penz Hotel is a study in contemporary lines and glass, emphasizing elegant architecture and minimalist interiors.
The real winter magic happens on the rooftop: a bar and breakfast area with sweeping views over Innsbruck’s Old Town rooftops and the surrounding Tyrolean Alps. Morning here means lavish buffet breakfasts with an almost cult-followed selection of jams; evenings bring cocktails framed by snow-dusted peaks.
Concierge note: We like The Penz for guests who want easy access to shops, cafés, and the city’s Christmas markets, with ski lifts still an easy transfer away.
Grand Hotel Europa – Since 1869
For: Classic grand-dame energy with design details
Opposite Innsbruck’s main train station and a short walk from the Old Town, Grand Hotel Europa – Since 1869 brings traditional grand-hotel gravitas into the 21st century.
Inside, you’ll find Italian-influenced interiors, a restaurant serving Tyrolean cuisine in a wood-paneled dining room, and an adjacent bar and casino — a combination that maintains a sense of old-world glamour.
Concierge note: This is the choice for guests who still appreciate bellmen in proper uniforms and a lobby that feels like it has stories to tell. For many, it’s also logistically effortless: you can step off a train from Munich, check in, and be sipping a drink at Europa Bar within minutes.
Lanserhof Lans (near Innsbruck)
For: Serious wellness & sculptural Alpine design
A short drive into the Tyrolean hills brings you to Lanserhof Lans, a renowned medical spa set among forests and mountain views. Opened in 1984 and extensively renovated in 2017, the property now showcases a striking wood-and-glass design that integrates the buildings with their Alpine surroundings.
Lanserhof is considered a leader in holistic medicine in Europe, blending advanced diagnostics with natural-healing concepts. Guests come for intensive programs focused on detox, regeneration, and preventative health — including tailored fasting, physiotherapy, cryotherapy, and other targeted treatments.
Interiors are deliberately serene: pale woods, generous windows, and neutral textiles create a meditative atmosphere for its 60-plus rooms and suites, many with expansive mountain views.
Concierge note: This is not a “pop in for a quick facial” spa; it’s a full reset. We typically recommend Lanserhof for guests ready to commit at least a week and treat it as a health investment as much as a holiday.
Planning Your Own Design Winter Escape
A few practical notes from our team:
Seasonal details shift. Rooftop bars, winter terraces, and spa opening hours can vary by season and weather; we always reconfirm details — including private spa availability and any age restrictions — before finalizing your itinerary.
Holiday periods book early. In December, Prague’s Old Town and Innsbruck’s Alpine region fill quickly around market season and ski holidays; design-forward hotels with fewer rooms often sell out first.
Wellness stays need lead time. Medical and holistic programs at places like Lanserhof typically require advance consultation and pre-booked treatment schedules.
